Pandemic Poem #54 / The News Is Good

I’m in regional Victoria so we’ll be out of lockdown tomorrow. Unfortunately my body doesn’t know the difference between good changes and bad ones.

The News Is Good

my lungs are permanently inflated
and I’m ready to run

staking out the high ground
meerkat movements
my eyes playing darts
phone filling with silent alarms
klaxons resounding
I heard, I already heard
I know the news is good
but also, the dishes are out to get me

the world is flippant
colourful fish in the bottom of a small boat in a storm
I’m gasping for breath

my lungs are permanently inflated
take me to the high ground
I’m the lightning rod
and it doesn’t matter that the news is good
my body doesn’t know the difference
I’m struck down regardless
