Slater curls inside herself
her soft belly safe
unrecognisable
she is a rock
this protection
conservation of energy
she will withstand the worst of the world
not guns-blazing
but navel-gazing
weaponised avoidance
she is immovable
don’t wanna
impenetrable
head meeting sand
heels digging in
not arm-waving brave
but knowing when to rest brave
and tired
so tired
don’t wanna be a hero
